The ConVal Girls Tennis Team won their first match of the season today, Wednesday, April 3rd, at home against Pelham. ConVal has never played Pelham before as they were previously in Division III.
Senior Julia Peters won handily over her opponent 8-1 in very windy conditions. Junior Catrina Kipka played in the #2 spot and won 8-3 while freshman Eva Calcutt played #3 singles and won her match 8-5 in a “come from behind” victory. Junior Lena LaFleur lost 4-8 but played well while senior Jill Karlicek beat her opponent 8-2. Rounding out the top of the line-up today was Fiona Pieterse who lost 1-8 but impressed Coach Glo with getting the majority of her serves in even with the wind.
Julia and Catrina played in the #1 doubles spot and won 8-1 in a match with lots of good shots and strategy. Catrina had several good volleys at the net and Julia was master of the passing shot today. Lena and Eva played in the #2 position and were toe-to-toe with their opponents but lost in the end 7-9. Lena had a lot of successful lobs over her opponents and both girls were running down a lot of balls. Pelham defaulted the #3 spot as one of their players was suffering from an injury incurred a few days ago.
Neither Zoe Werth or Sandra MacKay played in todays match.
ConVal Girls Tennis play again at home on Friday, April 5th, at 4 PM vs. Bow.
